What Constitutes an Emergency?
A dental emergency is any situation that requires immediate attention to alleviate severe pain, stop bleeding, or prevent further damage to your oral health. Here are some common dental emergencies that we treat:
- Severe Toothache: Intense pain in your tooth can indicate an underlying issue such as an infection or abscess. Prompt treatment is essential to relieve pain and address the root cause.
- Broken or Chipped Tooth: Accidents or injuries can lead to a broken or chipped tooth, which not only affects your smile but can also cause significant discomfort. Immediate care helps prevent further damage and restores the tooth’s function.
- Knocked-Out Tooth: If a tooth is knocked out, quick action is crucial. The chances of saving the tooth increase significantly if you receive treatment within the first hour.
- Lost Filling or Crown: A lost filling or crown can leave your tooth vulnerable to further damage or infection. Seeking prompt treatment can prevent complications and restore your tooth’s integrity.
- Dental Abscess: An abscess is a serious infection that appears as a swollen area on the gums, often accompanied by severe pain and fever. This condition requires immediate attention to prevent the infection from spreading.
A dental emergency is any situation that requires immediate attention to alleviate severe pain, stop bleeding, or prevent further damage to your oral health.
Upon arrival, we’ll conduct a thorough examination of the affected area and identify the best course of action.
Our first priority is to relieve your pain and discomfort. We’ll administer appropriate treatment to address the immediate symptoms.
We’ll develop a treatment plan that may include repairing the damaged tooth, treating an infection, or providing a temporary solution until a more permanent treatment can be arranged.

- Toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm water and gently floss around the affected tooth to remove any debris. If the pain persists, contact us immediately for an appointment.
- Broken or Chipped Tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water and save any pieces of the tooth if possible. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth to reduce swelling, and see us as soon as possible.
- Knocked-Out Tooth: Handle the tooth by the crown (the top part) and rinse it gently with water. If possible, try to place the tooth back in its socket without touching the root. If that’s not possible, keep the tooth moist by placing it in a container of milk or saline solution and contact our surgery right away.
- Lost Filling or Crown: Keep the affected tooth clean and avoid chewing on it until you can see us. If you still have the crown, bring it with you to your appointment.
- Abscess: Rinse your mouth with a mild saltwater solution several times a day to help draw out the infection. Contact us immediately for an appointment, as abscesses require urgent care.

At Contemporary Smiles, we make it a priority to see emergency patients as quickly as possible. When you call us with a dental emergency, our team will assess your situation over the phone and schedule a same-day appointment if possible and if necessary. Here’s what you can expect during your emergency visit:
- Immediate Evaluation: Upon arrival, we’ll conduct a thorough examination of the affected area to determine the severity of the issue and identify the best course of action.
- Pain Management: Our first priority is to relieve your pain and discomfort. We’ll administer appropriate treatment to address the immediate symptoms.
- Treatment Plan: Depending on the nature of the emergency, we’ll develop a treatment plan that may include repairing the damaged tooth, treating an infection, or providing a temporary solution until a more permanent treatment can be arranged.
- Follow-Up Care: After your emergency treatment, we’ll schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure your recovery is on track and discuss any additional treatment that may be needed.
Preventing Dental Emergencies
While not all dental emergencies can be prevented, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk:
- Regular Check-Ups: Regular dental check-ups allow us to identify potential issues before they become emergencies. Routine care helps maintain your oral health and catch problems early.
- Protective Gear: If you participate in sports or other activities with a risk of injury, wearing a mouthguard can protect your teeth from damage.
- Healthy Habits: Avoid using your teeth as tools to open packages or crack nuts, as this can lead to chips and fractures. Additionally, maintaining good oral hygiene and a balanced diet helps keep your teeth and gums strong.
Frequently Asked Questions
Our patients ask lots of questions. We’re glad you do as it means we can make your visit to the dentist a pleasant an enjoyable time. Here are some of the questions we frequently get asked:
How do I find the best dentist to visit?
With so many dentists to choose from, how do you know you’re choosing the right one? Just make sure your dentist is good at the following:
- Actively listens to you
- Educates you on treatments and oral health
- Respects your time and resources
- Keeps a tidy practice
- Doesn’t up-sell to you
- Gets to know you
- Follows-up with you
- Values you as a patient
Ultimately, the right dentist for you always gives the care that you and your family deserve.
Why is a dental health checkup so important?
Dental health check-ups are a vital part of your overall oral health regime. If you wish to maintain happy and healthy teeth and gums you should aim to book an examination, check-up and clean at least every 6 months.
During your check-up and clean, your dental professional will check your overall oral health for any trouble areas, and will remove any plague and tartar build-ups that you are unable to remove with normal brushing and flossing.
Is dental hygiene important to my overall health?
Your oral health is actually a window to your overall health, and problems in your mouth can affect the rest of your body. Poor oral health may contribute to a number of conditions, including heart disease, pneumonia, diabetes and endocarditis.
This makes it important to practice good oral health techniques every day. You should brush your teeth at least twice a day; floss daily; limit your sugar intake; replace your toothbrush every three months; and schedule regular dental check-ups and professional cleans.
What is the average cost of teeth cleaning?
Pricing does depend on a variety of factors, including location, overheads and variances in the methods used (not all fillings are the same). But something you should always look into before booking a check-up and clean is what is actually included in your dental check-up.
If you book your regular check-ups at Contemporary Smiles, you will receive the following treatments:
- a comprehensive oral exam
- a check-up and clean (existing patients)
- X-rays (if we don’t already have them on file).
Note: New patients at Contemporary Smiles will need to book in for a comprehensive initial examination with a dentist before a check-up and clean can be booked. This ensures we can provide you with the best treatment, and can identify any issues before they become a problem.
This would cost a total of $255.00 (although would be a much less if you have health insurance that covers dental treatments).
Price is obviously a factor, but is not the only important thing to look at when choosing a dentist for your next exam, check-up and clean.
